On Aug. 25, a 21-year-old man pleaded not guilty in a DuPage County court to nine total counts of aggravated DUI stemming from a fatal accident in Naperville. If convicted, the man may receive a prison sentence of six to 28 years, reportedly.
A worker at an Illinois construction site was killed when an alleged drunk driver crashed his vehicle at the site. The accident happened on June 21 in Chicago's Southwest Side. According to prosecutors, the driver is a 19-year-old man who had a blood alcohol content of 0.191 percent, which is more than twice the legal limit for adults in Illinois.
On May 21, a drunk driving accident in Illinois led to a 16-year prison sentence for a 23-year-old woman who was convicted in the death of a Northwestern University student in 2012. The woman pleaded guilty to failure to report a deadly accident and aggravated DUI resulting in death. She will be credited for 236 days or about eight months that she had already spent in custody. State law requires her to serve a minimum of 85 percent of her sentence, and upon her release, she will be supervised in the community for 24 months.

A 54-year-old wife and mother of two who had been working for a thrift store in Washington Heights for more than 25 years lost her life to an accidental shooting on March 7. She was sorting through some donated clothing items with a male co-worker as part of her job at the South Ashland Avenue facility. Inside a sock, the co-worker found a .22 caliber handgun that, when the man shook it out of the sock, accidentally discharged, hitting the woman in the chest.
A 20-year-old man has been arrested and charged with multiple charges including driving under the influence of drugs, three counts of aggravated DUI involving death, and driving on a suspended license. The arrest came after a single car crash that occurred at about 2 a.m. At the time of the car accident, the vehicle was occupied by the driver, a front seat passenger and 21-year-old passenger sitting in the back seat who was killed in the crash.
On the morning of Feb. 14, an Illinois Department of Transportation snowplow driver lost his life in a work-related accident on Route 17 in Stark County. The driver, who was out clearing the roadway and battling the elements, pulled the plow over to assist an immobilized driver on the side of the road. Witnesses say another driver lost control of their vehicle and hit the 49-year-old IDOT employee. He died from his injuries a short while later after being transported to Kewanee Hospital.
A fatal auto-pedestrian traffic crash in Silvis took the life of a woman just after 3 a.m. on Feb. 9 at the route 84 ramp to John Deere Road westbound. Silvis police, who responded to the accident, say that the woman was struck by a car and that she was dead when officers arrived. The woman has been identified as a 54-year-old Silvis woman. According to the Rock Island County Coroner, the woman died of multiple traumatic injuries.
According to a report, a 39-year-old man who was working as an Illinois Tollway maintenance employee was killed on Jan. 27 after a truck driver crashed into a toll plaza. An Illinois State trooper was also injured in the incident.
