The deadliest time to be on the road

Serious car accidents happen around the clock. There is nothing that anyone can do to guarantee that they will not get involved in such a crash.

That said, statistics can tell us when the risk is highest. One way to look at it is by seeing when the most fatal accidents tend to happen. This shows you what times you want to avoid driving if at all possible.

In one study, the three-hour block with the most fatalities started at midnight on Saturday and ended at 3:00 a.m. Researchers found that a full 1,015 fatalities happened in this window, the most in any such block of time.

The second-deadliest stretch of three hours was from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., also on Saturday. That window of time saw a total of 1,001 deaths, just slightly less than the late-night window noted above.

What this really demonstrates is that driving in the evening, night or early morning puts you at risk. This is especially true on the weekends. Drunk driving certainly plays a large role here. It's more common on the weekends and at night, corresponding with these high-risk times.

Now, even if you do not drive while you are intoxicated, that does not completely keep you safe. You could still get hit by another driver who decided not to make the same responsible choice that you made.

If this does happen, and if you end up facing high medical bills for serious injuries, as a result, make sure you understand whether or not you have a right to seek out financial compensation from the driver responsible.
