Remember: Thanksgiving Eve is the biggest drinking night

Thanksgiving is coming, and with it comes football, family, turkey and a relaxing day as we move into the Christmas holiday season. However, it's important to remember that Thanksgiving Eve precedes it, and this is the single biggest drinking holiday in the United States.

That's surprising to many people, especially considering that holidays like New Year's Eve center around drinking, and Thanksgiving does not. But that's what the statistics show. It's often talked about as the biggest bar night of the year, and the odds of a drunk driving accident skyrocket.

Why is this? A few potential reasons include:

  • While a few people have to work the following day, most do not, so they stay out later and drink more.
  • People come home for the holiday and want to see their friends. Since Thanksgiving is a family holiday, that night before is a good time to do it.
  • People who plan to host a Thanksgiving party the next day don't want to host that night, so they go to the bar.
  • People know that the next day is for eating a big meal, sleeping in late and relaxing on the couch. If they're tired or hungover, they can still enjoy the day.

All in all, it just seems to cater to this tradition. Thanksgiving Eve is a day that promotes that type of partying, and many people take advantage of it.

The downside, of course, is that drunk driving accidents happen because of this heavy drinking culture. If you get injured in an accident caused by a drunk driver, make sure you know what steps to take.
