Teen charged after deadly impaired driving accident

A 19-year-old man in Illinois was involved in a car accident that turned out to be fatal to an unborn baby. Now, the man has now been accused of driving under the influence of marijuana and has been arrested.

The crash happened in Mascoutah back on May 4, but the man is just now facing charges. Police say that the man was supposed to come to a stop at a sign at the intersection between Brickyard Road and Jefferson Road, but he failed to do so. As he apparently ran the stop sign, he slammed into a second vehicle with two occupants. Both cars flipped and went off of the road.

One of those occupants in the other car was a woman who had been pregnant for seven months. She was rushed to Shiloh and taken to the emergency room, where doctors had to deliver the baby two months early. They then used a helicopter to rush the young child to St. Louis Children's Hospital. Despite their best efforts, they could not save the child.

Police had to wait for lab results after the accident, which is why the man went without charges for months. When those tests came back, they say that the indication was that there was marijuana in the man's system when he caused the accident.

The extent of the injuries to the other parties is unclear, but reports do note that all of them went to the hospital after the wreck. The driver who caused the crash was treated and then released by both the hospital and the police, pending the aforementioned lab tests.

If you have lost a loved one or suffered serious injuries in an accident, you may have a right to financial compensation.
