Do funerals have to be expensive?

You lose a loved one in a workplace accident. You get the call from the authorities, or someone shows up at your door, and it's already too late. It happened so fast.

This is incredibly jarring on many levels. Emotionally, you feel lost. Mentally, it's hard to wrap your head around the sudden change. Financially, you do not know how you're going to make ends meet.

On top of all of that, you also struggle with the sudden expense of a funeral. You didn't save up the $7,000 to $10,000 that it usually costs to have a funeral in the United States. Does it have to be so expensive?

It does not always have to be that expensive. Experts note that careful planning can keep it under that average low end of $7,000. They also note that the more economical way to go is to have a cremation, rather than a traditional burial. If your loved one made an estate plan with saving money as a main focus, you may even find that they prefer cremation.

Even so, you are likely looking at thousands of dollars in sudden expenses; just because it's not $10,000 does not mean it's insubstantial. You also have to consider the lost wages since your loved one is no longer bringing in a paycheck, potential medical costs if they were taken to the hospital before passing away and much more. What are you supposed to do?

While every case is unique, it is very important to understand all of the legal options you have when facing this type of financial hurdle after a workplace death.
