The only driver you control is you

There is an important mantra to keep in mind when you go out on the road: The only driver you control is you. You can't control what anyone else does, and that puts you at risk. You can't avoid that risk. But you can control what you do to reduce it.

For instance, other drivers may get distracted by:

  • Talking to their passengers
  • Disciplining their kids
  • Reading a map
  • Doing personal grooming, like applying makeup and shaving
  • Reading a book
  • Changing the radio station
  • Streaming a new playlist
  • Sending a text message
  • Reading a text message
  • Making a phone call
  • Eating while driving
  • Smoking in the car
  • Drinking alcohol, coffee, or anything else
  • Getting into an argument
  • Gawking at things outside of the car

Distractions are everywhere, and they're only one of the mistakes that drivers make. It's going to happen.

What you can do is to avoid these distractions yourself. Stay alert and focused at all times. Look for warning signs that other drivers are distracted. Get ready to react quickly to avoid a crash.

You wish that you could keep everyone else from getting distracted, breaking the speed limit, driving while intoxicated and making all sorts of other mistakes, but you can't. Instead, just focus on putting safety first and doing what you can to keep from getting hurt in an accident.

Naturally, even your best efforts may not be enough. If you do get into an accident and you suffer some serious injuries as a result, be sure that you fully understand all of the legal rights you have to financial compensation.
