When he was 16 years old, a boy in Illinois was involved in a car accident that left him with significant injuries. His 15-year-old brother was also in the car. Tragically, his brother passed away from his injuries.
The driver who caused the accident is a 36-year-old woman. She is accused of driving under the influence while causing the fatal accident. Her case is now going to court, and the young man who survived gave a chilling account of what happened on that fateful night.
The accident happened at an intersection. The boys were traveling down Illinois Route 17, heading west. The woman was also approaching the intersection via 19000 Road, heading south. It's a T intersection.
"I said 'That car's going kind of fast,'" the teen recounted. "I sped up to get through the intersection, and that's all I can remember...At that point, I realized (the other car) was not going to stop. I don't remember anything after."
The road they were on has a posted limit of 55 miles per hour. The boy said he was only going around 60 miles per hour as he neared the intersection. When he thought the other car wouldn't stop, he attempted to speed up to avoid the impact. He made it to around 70 or 75 MPH, but that wasn't enough to beat the other driver through. She hit the passenger side of their vehicle, and the boy riding in that seat died at the accident scene.
An auto accident can change a family's life in a split second. Those involved must know what legal options they have.
