How can I protect my family from drunk drivers?

Hundreds of people in Illinois die each year because of drinking and driving, according to the Illinois State Police. This knowledge can be especially scary if you are a parent who depends on being able to safely drive your children from place to place. However, you are not powerless. There are some actions you can take to help prevent being hit by a drunk driver when you are on the road.

Several ways to avoid a car accident with a drunk driver, include:

  • Give other vehicles plenty of space. By driving several car lengths behind another vehicle, you will be able to have more time to respond to any act of erratic driving. To make this work, you may need to turn off cruise control. You may also consider avoiding typically busy driving hours or congested routes, so you will naturally have a little more space between you and other vehicles.
  • Be especially vigilant at intersections where drunk drivers may run red lights or fail to stop at stop signs. Make sure to look both ways before entering the intersection regardless of who has the right of way.
  • Avoid driving late at night. Many drunk driving accidents happen late in the evening or early in the morning, especially on weekends and holidays.

It is important to recognize that there may be instances when an accident is unavoidable. In case this happens, you should be sure every person in your vehicle is properly buckled in every time you drive. For children, this means making sure they have appropriate car seats for their sizes and making sure they know they must stay buckled in for the duration of the trip. Although your objective is to avoid drunk drivers, properly wearing seat belts can help prevent fatalities if a crash does happen.

Unfortunately, there are people who think they can get away with drinking and driving. If you stay sober and practice safe driving skills, you stand a better chance of keeping yourself and all of your passengers safe, wherever you may be driving.
