Round Lake Beach sees second fatal crash in just over a week

A 56-year-old bicyclist died after being struck by a vehicle on Oct. 30 in Round Lake Beach -- a northern suburb of Chicago. Local police say the crash occurred around 7:30 p.m. as the Round Lake Park man was crossing Fairfield Road.

Authorities say that the driver who struck him, a 41-year-old man who lives in Lake Villa, remained on the scene. He was given a toxicology test, but results are still pending.

The bicyclist was transported to a Libertyville hospital, where he was declared deceased. The Lake County coroner's office described the cause of death as blunt force injuries.

No details about how the crash occurred were reported. However, the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team is investigating it.

This was the second fatal crash in Round Lake Beach involving a bicyclist in just over a week. A 67-year-old man was killed on Oct. 22 as he was walking his bike across Route 83 not far from Monaville Road.

Police say that he was struck by a 26-year-old Lindenhurst woman who was driving southbound on the road. His cause of death is also believed to have been blunt force trauma. The same crash assistance team is investigating that accident as well.

Early evening after the sun has set can be a particularly dangerous time for pedestrians and bicyclists. Many drivers are on their way home from work and not paying as much attention as they should be. Although these two accidents occurred before the recent end of daylight saving time, now that it's getting dark an hour earlier, evening commuters may still be adjusting to driving home in the dark.

Unfortunately, pedestrians and bicyclists who are struck by vehicles often suffer severe and fatal injuries. If you or a loved one has been the victim of one of these crashes due to the negligence of the vehicle driver, it's essential to find out what your options are for seeking compensation for medical bills, lost wages, burial costs and more.
