Illinois man killed by truck while changing flat tire

This time of year, it's not unusual for cars to become disabled on the snowy highways of Illinois and points north. Motorists need to get their car off of the road before attending to it. Even then, it's essential to watch for oncoming traffic because drivers may not see you in time to stop -- particularly if they're traveling at highway speeds.

Tragedy struck earlier this month near Edgerton, Wisconsin, when an Illinois man was fatally struck by a semitruck after he got a flat tire. The accident happened just before 4:00 a.m. on Nov. 7 on Interstate 39/90.

The 59-year-old Hoffman Estates man was reportedly changing his tire in the northbound lane of the interstate when he was hit by the truck, which was being driven by a 30-year-old Fitchburg, Wisconsin, man.

Rock County Sheriff's Office personnel responded to the scene, as did fire and emergency medical personnel. The Wisconsin State Patrol is still investigating the accident, as is the Rock County Medical Examiner's Office.

Although the name of the victim was eventually made public, few other details have been released. It hasn't been reported whether the driver of the semitruck was cited for any violations or whether anyone else was injured in the crash.

When any type of vehicle accident occurs, whether it involves trucks, cars, pedestrians and/or bicyclists, the role of all parties will be looked at by law enforcement officers and other investigators. In many cases, these incidents are not completely the fault of one person. The actions or inaction of those injured in an accident can impact both whether criminal charges are filed and to what degree a driver can be held liable. An experienced Illinois personal injury attorney can provide guidance and recommendations based on your specific case.
