What should I do if I encounter a drunk driver?

When you head for work, school, to run errands, go to the doctor or simply enjoy a nice drive in Illinois, you never know when you will encounter a drunk driver. Despite efforts from law enforcement agencies, drunk driving is still a problem throughout DuPage County. So, what should you do if you encounter a drunk driver?

Should you come across a vehicle that is exhibiting the signs of inebriation, you need to safely position yourself in a way that does not put you in danger. After you do this, you will need to get the identifying information for the police. Try to ascertain the make, model, color and license plate number of the vehicle in question.

Always ignore the suspected drunk driver. Never try to engage the driver in conversation at a red light or make hand motions to them. This could cause them to become angry with you and might lead to a road rage incident.

Once you have the description of the vehicle, you need to move to a safe place off the road and call 911. Try to give the most information as possible, including the last known location of the suspected drunk driver. This will make it easier for the dispatcher to send police officers to search for the vehicle.

Spotting a drunk driver on the roads of Illinois can be quite scary. Make sure you can safely get a description of the vehicle to give to authorities. Once you report the driver, you should get away from the driver in a safe manner.
