Scaffolding safety tips to prevent workplace deaths

The construction industries is one of the most dangerous in which to work in DuPage County, Illinois. Even if you are as safe as possible, you never know when a tool might not work properly or a piece of equipment might fail, causing an injury. That's why it's important to do everything possible to prevent scaffolding accidents that could lead to workplace deaths.

First and foremost, every worker assigned to scaffolding should be properly trained before he or she begins work on the equipment. They need to know how it was built, how to operate it and the weight limit it can withstand. This ensures they know what can and cannot be loaded onto the equipment.

Every worker should also be properly equipped before stepping foot on scaffolding. This means they need to have goggles, a helmet, fall-prevention gear and nonslip boots. All of this equipment will help protect them should an accident happen.

The scaffolding needs to be inspected every morning prior to it being used. Why? If the site is abandoned at night you never know who might've stopped by and played around with the equipment. Check to make sure the equipment is still anchored to the ground and the building properly before sending any workers on it for the day.

Go one step further and make sure all of the company's licenses are active and up to date with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). You shouldn't just work for someone because they are providing you a job.

It takes more than just you to prevent a scaffolding accident on a construction site in Illinois. You need everyone on the site to get on board with all of the safety policies and procedures of the site in order to avoid work-related injuries.
