Making yourself visible on your motorcycle

Owning a motorcycle is one of the most exciting purchases you can make in your life. You need to be responsible from the minute you make the purchase so your investment can be protected. You also want to protect yourself. A great way to make sure that you are safe when you ride, whether at night or during the day, is to make yourself visible to all other drivers on the roads of DuPage County.

Motorcycle riders should always wear reflective gear no matter the time of day. This gear can be a shirt, jacket, gloves, stickers on the helmet, boots and even pants. Reflective apparel is important because the headlights of oncoming vehicles will reflect and let drivers know you are on the road in front of them.

Check the motorcycle prior to every ride to ensure that all of the lights are working. You should never ride your motorcycle when one of the lights is burnt out. For starters, this is against the law. And, secondly, it endangers you when riding. The lights help make it easier on other drivers to see you even during daylight hours.

When you ride a motorcycle, you should position yourself in the lane where other motorists can see you, especially if there is a lot of traffic. When stopped at an intersection, use another vehicle as a buffer between vehicles approaching from behind so you do not get hit.

Now that you know what it takes to make yourself visible on your motorcycle, you can ensure you are always safe in Illinois. There's nothing worse than riding a motorcycle and having trouble getting other motorists to notice you.
