How can you protect yourself from drunk drivers?

You are very cautious when you drive. You make sure you drive the speed limit. You always respect the road and drivers when you are behind the wheel. But what about when it comes to people who are driving impaired? Is there any way to protect yourself from them?

It sounds almost impossible. Drunk driving is still the #1 cause of death on our roadways, according to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).

Here are 10 things you can be on the lookout for when you are driving and the person may be impaired.

  • Drinking alcohol in the car
  • Driving much too leisurely
  • Driving on the wrong side of the road
  • Reacting to traffic signals slowly
  • Turning too wide
  • Nearly hitting another car or item
  • Driving in the middle of the road
  • Braking for no reason
  • Stopping improperly
  • Making illegal or abrupt turns

What you can do to stay safe

Be aware at night. If you see a motorist driving while impaired there are things you can do to stay safe. Drive defensively and be ready to react. You should stay far away from the impaired motorist, if they approach you just let them pass. It is also a good idea to call the police if you suspect a driver is driving drunk. Tell them you would like to report a driver that you suspect is driving drunk. Also, give your location and a detailed description of the vehicle.

4 things to never do:

There are many actions you can take to try and stay safe on the road but there are some things you probably should not do.

  1. Do not try to keep the impaired motorist at the scene, if he stops.
  2. Do not try to stop the impaired driver’s car.
  3. If the motorist is speeding, it is not a good idea to follow the car.
  4. Unless you are trained, do not act in the capacity of the police, medical or fire person.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), each day in the United States 29 people die in crashes that involve a drunk driver. To make the statistic even more startling, that is one death every 50 minutes. This is a huge problem that needs to be stopped. The best thing you can do is try to protect yourself as much as possible when you are behind the wheel. It could mean the difference between life and death.
