Illinois road claims new victim, brings community together

Although drivers are always working to keep the roads safe, some roads in Illinois are safer than others. Areas that lend themselves to careless, negligent or distracted driving can be the site of serious crashes, causing severe damage and injury to cars, their drivers and passengers.

A community is coming together around a stretch of dangerous road that has claimed lives and continues to pose a danger to those who travel it. A dump truck recently struck a sport utility vehicle on a section of State Route 3 near Veterans Parkway in Columbia. The driver was killed and six of the victim's children were injured, two critically.

One witness told a Belleville newspaper that the dump truck's 86-year-old driver ran a red light to cause the crash. Two local women, one of whom lost her son to a traffic accident on the same piece of road, said drivers routinely speed down the road and disobey red lights.

A Facebook group founded to call for safety improvements on the section of Route 3 had 300 followers just before the recent accident. There are now more than 2,000 followers now. "We need some major change because this is going to happen again," said the group's organizer. "It's inevitable."

Victims of truck accidents and the survivors of those killed have the right to claim financial damages in a civil lawsuit against the at-fault parties. This process may also lead to making a place, vehicle or driver safer and avoiding a future disaster. An attorney can help begin this process towards settlement, jury verdict or other conclusion.
