Highway worker killed on the job in Illinois

Workplaces need to be safe for work to get done and workers to feel secure when they show up for shifts. From construction projects in Chicago to farms in the Mississippi River Valley, Illinois hosts a wide variety of jobs that require different safety requirements.

One of the most dangerous careers is highway maintenance, which combines heavy machinery with outdoor workspaces that cars and truck are often speeding through. Highway patrol officers and toll collectors also often share these dangers.

A tollway worker was killed when he was struck by a truck on the side of the road he was cleaning in the fall of 2017. After an investigation, the Illinois State Police is charging the alleged driver of the truck with negligent homicide.

The 48-year-old Monee native was returning to his vehicle after picking up debris on the Tri-State Tollway at the time of his death. The driver charged with homicide was seen swerving on the highway before he sideswiped the victim.

The driver of the truck turned his vehicle over to the police, who found the victim's DNA on the side. The survivors of the fatally injured worker may sue the driver or the tollway administration if it caused an unsafe working environment.

Victims of workplace injuries or deaths in various work environments may have a case for financial damages, including reimbursement for medical or end-of-life expenses and compensation for wages lost during recovery or the premature end of a career. An attorney may be able to help victims and their families weigh their legal options for settlements and lawsuits.
