Illinois man charged with DUI after fatal collision

From the streets of Chicago to the rolling hills near Carbondale, driving is the most popular way to travel through and around Illinois. Although the roads of the Land of Lincoln are generally safe, there are too many hazards to entirely avoid collisions and other accidents.

Certain dangers are more likely to cause serious injury, such as high-speed collisions or failure to stop at stop signs. One of the worst hazards on the roads is the rare occurrence of a driver operating a car or truck under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

A 23-year-old male driver has been charged with reckless homicide and aggravated driving under the influence after prosecutors concluded he was on drugs and using his cellphone while driving. These violations contributed to the deaths of two people in a van that the man struck at high speed.

Cook County prosecutors say that the car that caused the collision was traveling in excess of 80 mph in a 40-mph zone when he struck the passenger side of the van, killing the 60-year-old driver and 62-year-old passenger before emergency services could arrive. The driver of the car was also injured and appeared in court in a wheelchair.

Victims of motor vehicle accidents and the survivors of those killed in them have the right to seek financial damages, such as reimbursement for medical expenses and compensation for pain and emotional distress, from the parties at fault. An attorney may help these victims and their families enter the world of civil law with a clear concept of how to proceed.
