Illinois road worker killed by passing truck

Safety is a primary concern in all workplaces, from office cubes to construction sites. Some workplaces contain more hazards to worker safety than others, requiring attention to detail and constant vigilance to avoid injuries, damage or deaths.

The road is not only dangerous to drivers, passengers and pedestrians but also maintenance workers who keep the roads open and in good condition. A high number of motor vehicle accidents occur in construction zones, although routine maintenance can also put people at risk.

A tragic collision took the life of an Illinois Tollway worker on a recent Monday afternoon when a semitruck driver struck him while heading southbound on I-294. The victim and a co-worker were outside their vehicle gathering debris on the side of the road when the passing truck hit him.

The worker was pronounced dead at the scene. The speed of the truck was unclear but it did not stop. Signs on the highway remind drivers to yield to workers, which can avoid collisions and confusion.

"[Drivers] are encouraged and obligated to slow down," an officer of the Illinois State Police said. "Change lanes when applicable to avoid tragedies like this."

Victims of truck accidents, and the families of those killed by such accidents, have the right to pursue reimbursement for medical expenses, end-of-life costs and lost wages. Compensation for pain and suffering is also a possible outcome of settlements and court actions.

Legal representation is advisable for people sorting out their options after a commercial truck accident or workplace accident that has affected their lives.
