Could a concussion turn fatal?

If you get a concussion in a car accident, you may run into some of the more common symptoms in the next hours, days or even weeks. These include things like:

-- Headaches and pressure that just won't stop.

-- The inability to remember the accident.

-- Nausea and vomiting.

-- Mental fatigue and related issues, like feeling dazed, as if you're "in a fog."

You know concussions are serious, though you may have heard that the symptoms usually go away with time and rest. What you're wondering, then, is if an injury like this could actually be even more serious than anticipated? Could it wind up being fatal?

Brain injuries can be fatal, warns the staff at the Mayo Clinic, one of the most respected medical institutions in the country. A particularly bad concussion can cause bleeding, either within the brain itself or around the brain, putting pressure on it. Brain bleeds can have a serious impact and can be deadly.

The key is to keep an eye on the symptoms. If they stay the same or get better, you're seeing the progress that you want -- though it's still wise to consult medical professionals. If the symptoms quickly start to get worse, though, that could indicate that it's more than a simple concussion.

Was one of your loved ones in a car accident, suffering a closed head injury and then passing away due to bleeding on the brain? If so, you and your family may be able to seek compensation for things like lost future wages and funeral expenses.
