May is Motorcycle Awareness Month in Illinois

On May 3, Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner kicked off Motorcycle Awareness Month by cruising on his two-wheeled cycle to the Old State Capitol. The governor was part of the state's effort to increase awareness about motorcycle safety throughout the state.

This was the 33rd year in a row that Illinois officials dedicated the month of May to the worthy cause of motorcycle safety. According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, in 2015, approximately 1,000 lives were lost in traffic fatalities. Of that total, 146 died while riding on a motorcycle.

Both riders and law enforcement officers encourage all motorcyclists to make extra certain that they are highly visible when riding on a cycle. Maintaining one's bike by keeping up with the maintenance reduces the likelihood of mechanical problems.

The Illinois State Police offer riders tips on their website for a safer riding experience. Some advice they suggest includes the following:

-- Don't rely solely on your mirrors while riding. Turn your head to make sure there are no vehicles in a bike's blind spots.

-- Beware of "road gators," those loops of tread from 18-wheelers that blew out a tire. These can cause a two-wheeled cycle to crash.

-- Some intersections have signal lights with sensors that are tripped by a vehicle's weight. Light-bodied motorcycles may not weigh enough to trip the sensors unless the bike is positioned just right.

If you suffer injuries in a motorcycle accident due to another driver's negligence or reckless actions, you have the right to pursue compensation from the insurance company with whom they had a policy.
