Woman dies at scene of Illinois crash

Earlier this month in Oak Brook, an 86-year-old driver was killed in a two-car collision while eastbound on 31st Street near I-294.

Oak Brook police officers and fire department personnel discovered the Brookfield woman unresponsive in a red Ford Escort shortly before 11:30 a.m. on Dec. 8. Her car had broken down in the right lane when another driver made a sudden lane change. The driver of a white GMC Sierra then struck her vehicle.

The driver of the Sierra, a 27-year-old Villa Park man, was transported to a nearby hospital and evaluated, but police reported he was not seriously injured.

The elderly woman was treated at the scene and then taken via ambulance to a local hospital where she later died from her injuries.

Officers with the Felony Investigative Assistance Team and the coroner from DuPage County were called to the scene to assist the Oak Brook police officers and conduct a reconstruction of the accident, which remains under investigation.

When accidents occur like the one above, where one driver makes a driving move that then causes other drivers to collide, it can be complicated to assess liability for the accident to the proper parties. Often a driver may not even be aware that their actions set off an accident behind them, and so they do not stop at the scene.

However, all drivers are supposed to leave enough distance between them and the car ahead to allow for impulsive or erratic driving by others. When this is impossible, collisions frequently occur. If you suffered injuries in a collision with another driver, you may need to pursue a claim for damages from more than one driver.
