Construction workers die in accident involving mast climber

Illinois residents might be interested to learn about a fatal accident involving construction workers that took place in North Carolina on March 24. While they were working on the Charter Square building in downtown Raleigh, three workers fell to their deaths and a fourth worker was seriously injured. All of the men who were involved in the accident were Hispanic, and they ranged in age from 33 to 53.

According to reports about the fatal accident, the workers who were killed and injured at the construction site in the state's capital were using a mast-climbing work platform. Although these motorized scaffolding systems can be installed and dismantled quickly, workers must be specially trained in order to use them safely. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration will reportedly be looking into whether the workers had been trained properly before their fatal attempt to dismantle the mast climber.

In addition to training, OSHA investigators will examine whether proper procedures were followed before the accident. Investigators will also look into possible factors that could have caused the accident like a manufacturing defect or high wind conditions. They will also examine whether the mast climber that was being used had been installed correctly.

People who have sustained an injury in a workplace accident may file a claim for workers' compensation benefits, in most cases regardless of who or what caused the accident. If a manufacturing defect is to blame for an accident, it is possible that the injured workers may be able to file a separate personal injury action as well. Family members of a deceased worker may claim workers' compensation death benefits to make up for the loss of their loved one's income.
