Survey reports teen distraction is a major factor while driving

According to survey data compiled by a transportation engineering faculty member at Oregon State University, responsible motorists in Illinois and other parts of the country may face a heightened risk from teenage drivers. More than a quarter of teens surveyed reported engaging in dangerous behaviors like changing apparel while driving. Although the researchers lauded an overall reduction in the fraction of teenagers who composed or read text messages while driving, an approximate 40 percent of teen motorists continued to text.

Drivers need to be aware of the unique risks posed by semi-trucks and other large commercial vehicles. While truck drivers should be vigilant in order to safely operate their oversized vehicles, other drivers should also take extra care when driving in their vicinity.

Truck driver and trucking company sued over fatal accident

Media outlets in Illinois have reported that a wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against a 23-year-old man who was behind the wheel of a truck that struck and killed three pedestrians on March 6. The truck driver's employer is also named in the lawsuit. The family of the woman and two children killed claim that the man was using a mobile phone at the time of the accident.

Comparative and contributory negligence theories

However, because Illinois had adopted the comparative negligence theory of liability, an injured person may still be held partially responsible for causing the crash.

Car crashes into Illinois home

Authorities say it was fortunate that no one was seriously injured in a Feb. 25 accident in which a car slammed into an Illinois house at around 10 p.m. The driver and passenger in the car were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The home's two residents were rescued by the fire department from the second floor of their house due to structural damage that made it unsafe for them to go downstairs on their own.
