Man killed by drunk driver in fiery crash

On Dec. 5, a 37-year-old Illinois man was killed in a two-vehicle crash involving a drunk driver. Three days later, the 29-year-old man who is accused of causing the fatal car accident was held on $500,000 bond and charged for two counts of aggravated DUI causing death.

According to police, the fatal collision took place in West Chicago shortly after 11 p.m. Officers responded to the intersection of Route 59 and Garys Mill Road and found two cars on fire. An initial investigation revealed that the accused drunk driver had been traveling northbound along Route 59 when he struck the victim's car. At the time, the victim had been attempting to turn left at the intersection.

The 37-year-old man was pronounced dead at the accident scene while the driver at fault and his passenger both suffered from various injuries, including burns. According to prosecutors, the at-fault driver registered a blood-alcohol level that was over twice the legal limit when he was tested after the crash. He is scheduled to appear in court to face his charges on Jan. 5.

Certain family members of a deceased car accident victim could be entitled to file a wrongful death claim on the victim's behalf. Claimants could include victim's wife, parents or children. Since this could be a difficult time for families, they may choose to seek help from an attorney during the process of filing a wrongful death claim. An attorney might help the victim's family ensure that their claim is well supported by evidence and that it seeks an appropriate award for damages.
