1 injured in Illinois taxi-house crash, driver sought

In the early morning hours of Dec. 1, a taxicab driver slammed his vehicle into a house in the 1800 block of Gregory Avenue in Glendale Heights, and then left the accident scene. One person inside the house suffered injuries and was trapped for a time underneath the debris of the crash. A search to locate the taxi driver was conducted by the police.

The homeowner, who had just moved out of the house the day before, said his father was sleeping in a bed on the other side of the wall that came down when the taxi hit the house around 1 a.m. The impact of the crash pushed the bed to the opposite end of the room. A dog lying on the bed was not hurt, although the dog and the homeowner's father were trapped beneath a fallen treadmill upon which the car landed.

The homeowner's father injuries included a torn spleen, broken bones and pain in his leg. The homeowner's mother, who was preparing to enter the bedroom at the time of the crash, was not injured. The homeowner speculated on what the outcome would have been if the car had hit the house a few inches over from where it did.

A car crashing into the sleeping quarters of a house in the early morning hours with enough force to bring down a wall is likely to result in injuries to those sleeping inside. Residents who suffer temporary or permanent disabilities from such an event may benefit from pursuing a personal injury claim against the responsible party and their insurance company. In such a claim, they may be able to obtain reimbursement for the costs of medical and rehabilitative care they could require, as well as the value of earnings lost while they are unable to work.
