Law enforcement authorities reported that a head-on collision claimed the life of a Dahlgren man on Nov. 4. The accident reportedly happened on Illinois Route 142 near the Hamilton/Jefferson County line around 5:10 p.m.
The 69-year-old Dahlgren man was reportedly driving a 2006 GMC Canyon pickup truck south on Route 142. A 2013 Dodge Avenger being driven by a 23-year-old Mt. Vernon man was headed north. As the vehicles neared one another, the 23-year-old driver allegedly crossed the centerline, colliding with the pickup truck head-on.
The force of the collision then sent the Avenger careening north where it hit a second vehicle, a 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt being driven by a 22-year-old woman. The McLeansboro woman was not injured in the second crash. The 69-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. The 23-year-old man had to be transported via ambulance to a hospital for treatment of injuries he suffered in the two accidents.
