Around 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 5, a fatal accident occurred in Oak Lawn. Police reported that an 81-year-old man was speeding in a westbound pickup truck when he ran through a red light. He then allegedly jumped into the eastbound traffic and collided with 10 vehicles. The pickup truck driver and two nuns died in the crash.
A witness told police that before the accident, the man was seen slumped over in his vehicle three miles from the scene of the fatal crash. The witness offered assistance to the driver, but he declined. He continued driving erratically and hit three cars, though no one was injured in that accident.
In the fatal accident that occurred shortly after, responders treated 23 people, and 11 were transported to the hospital. Two of these victims were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where they were reportedly in critical condition.
Police indicated that the investigation was ongoing and that they have not ruled out alcohol as a contributing factor in this horrific accident. The family of the pickup truck driver was questioned in an effort to determine if any medical conditions may have caused an issue.
When a fatal accident happens, the families of people who are killed may choose to seek compensation for damages such as the loss of a loved one and funeral expenses. A personal injury attorney could help families obtain police reports from the investigation and sort through the details. The attorney can then assist family members in filing a wrongful death claim as well as negotiating an insurance settlement without ever needing to enter into court litigation.
