Truck driver facing charges in fatal Illinois crash

A 51-year-old man was taken into custody and faces charges in connection with a motor vehicle accident that left four people dead, including one minor. The accident occurred on July 21 near Channahon on Interstate 55. According to the Illinois State Police, a tractor-trailer rig was traveling north on the interstate in the left lane at a high rate of speed as it approached a construction zone and caused a chain-reaction crash.

Charges against the driver of the tractor-trailer rig include failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and falsifying driving records. Authorities say that charges of reckless homicide may be added. He is being held on a $1 million bond. Reports indicate that the man appeared in court on July 22 with an interpreter.

According to prosecutors, the man was driving for more than 12 hours, which is one hour more than the permissible 11 hours a driver can be behind the wheel in Illinois. A spokesman from the ISP stated that an initiative has been in place for the last six months to increase the awareness of fatal truck crashes. He also stated that fatigued drivers might be more prone to speeding or becoming distracted.

When a truck accident results in injuries, victims may be able to seek compensation by filing a personal injury lawsuit. When fatalities are involved, victims' families are sometimes able to file wrongful death suits for compensation of final expenses and loss of companionship. An attorney may assist individuals who are considering filing suit with gathering relevant evidence and preparing the right documentation to build a strong case against the liable party.
