Illinois State Police have reported that they are currently investigating a semi truck that ran off the interstate and into a business. According to the police report, the truck accident occurred after the driver suddenly left the highway and hitting several vehicles before stopping at the building.
The 76-year-old driver was reportedly heading east when he veered to the right of the highway, striking an Illinois Department of Transportation dump truck that had been sitting on the shoulder of the road. The truck drove through a ditch, struck down a fence and hit several unattended vehicles on its way to the building. According to an employee at the business, the truck did not enter the building but did knock down a fence and a power line. Firefighters responded to the scene.
The driver of the dump truck was treated at the hospital and was released. Luckily, none of the business employees were hurt as a result of the accident. The driver of the semi truck was also not injured. He was ticketed by police for improper lane use.
While the causes of this particular accident are still unknown, many semi truck accidents are caused due to sleep-deprived truck drivers or poorly maintained trucks. In many cases, accidents involving semi trucks often result in serious or fatal injuries. Not only will victims face expensive medical bills, but they may also face an uncertain future if they cannot work due to their injuries or if the primary wage earner was killed.
In many cases, the insurance companies that cover trucking companies may attempt to settle quickly in order to pay the victims less. An experienced Illinois attorney may be able to help victims and their families obtain a fair compensation for their clients by determining the extent of the victims' injuries or losses.
