1 dead and another injured in Illinois auto accident

One person is dead and another injured as the result of an auto accident that occurred May 5 in Edwardsville. Police have identified one of the victims as a 50-year-old woman who died at the scene. A 23-year-old man suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to an area hospital. Two other people were involved in the crash, including a juvenile, but they were not injured.

According to Edwardsville police, the woman who died was driving a 2002 Chrysler minivan in a northerly direction in the first block of South Plum Street around 6:57 a.m. The man who was injured was driving a 2004 Ford Explorer SUV and allegedly crossed into the woman's path, causing a head-on crash. A 1998 Nissan Alero, in which the juvenile was a passenger, was also involved in the auto accident, although no specific details are given.

Reports say the fatally injured woman was wearing her seatbelt, and her vehicle's airbags did deploy. The SUV driver was taken into custody on an outstanding warrant for battery in Madison County and will be appearing in court at a later date following his release from the hospital. The cause of the accident is still being investigated by the Illinois State Police, who conducted an accident reconstruction at the scene.

When a person is injured in an auto accident, there are often medical expenses to pay, and the victim often experiences pain and suffering. It is sometimes possible for an injured victim to receive compensation for damages with a personal injury lawsuit. When an accident results in death, the victim's family may be able to seek compensation for such things as funeral expenses and loss of companionship and financial support by filing a wrongful death lawsuit.
